A chrome extension called Cleanless to bring storefront sanitary grades to Seamless. The extension automatically displays restaurant sanitary grades at the click of a chef’s hat, mining data from New York City’s Department of Health and Mental hygiene (DOHMH) open data site.
This simple idea was executed as a visually appealing way to democratize open data, giving New Yorkers insight into whether their favorite hole-in-the-walls received an A, B, C, or Grade Pending in their last two restaurant inspections. The extension also flags whether or not a restaurant could be a “ghost restaurant,” which means it cannot be found by name in the DOHMH’s online records.
So, go ahead. Stay hungry and be your naughty, foodborne illness-free self. Download Cleanless for Seamless today from the Chrome Store.

How might we bring storefront restaurant sanitary grades to Seamless?
As a NYC-based creative agency, SID LEE knows that late night Seamless life. After learning about the infamous Prosperity Dumpling alley fiasco and the Seamless ghost restaurant pandemic, we decided that New Yorkers deserve to know the truth about their favorite delivery places.
Restaurant grades live in the physical world,
so why not online?
Thankfully, our trusty friends at the NYC Department of Health and Mental hygiene have got our back. We actually began to manually check NYC’s open sanitation records and cross-referenced health inspection grades. Then, the idea came to us that we should build a Chrome extension that engages citizens with public data and keeps Seamless in-the-know about restaurants with unsearchable listings by name.
BRANDING & UI ASSETS
HOW WE VISUALIZE GROSS-NESS
The visual identity comprises a clean, bright palette, infusing a sense of lightheartedness against a dirty and daunting topic. From rats to roaches any anything in between, I used quirky and borderline cute illustrations to soften otherwise hard subject matter.
