The Book
THE BOOK is a bedside smart lamp with a bookmarking function, inspired by the shape of a face down book. You may have experienced falling asleep while reading in bed. You often find the book face down while the light remains on when you wake up. THE BOOK offers a new solution by incorporating a bookmarking function into a turn-off switch of the lamp. The reader can bookmark their place in the book by placing it on THE BOOK, which turns off the lights.THE BOOK is the practical bedside lighting for people who love reading before bed.

How might we bookmark the book and turn off the lighting at the same time?
OVERVIEW
“I fall asleep reading *almost* every night."
You may have experienced falling asleep while reading in bed. Imagine you're ready to snuggle up in bed with your book. You open it and begin reading, excited for the adventure to come. The next thing you know, though, you wake up and it's morning. You fell asleep while reading!
THE GOAL
"Can a bookmark also turn off the light?"
THE BOOK offers a new solution by incorporating a bookmarking function into a turn-off switch of the lamp. The reader can bookmark their place in the book by placing it on THE BOOK, which turns off the lights.
PROTOTYPING PROCESS
Just one action of putting a book on THE BOOK can bookmark the book and turn off the lighting at the same time.
THE BOOK is composed of two thin frames reminiscent of a book cover. To implement the concept of the dual functionality of lighting and bookmarking, I inserted a 3mm-thick touch sensor and white LED between two thin layers. The touch sensor senses the pressure from a book turns on the LED when a book is placed on THE BOOK. Additionally, you can manually switch on and off the light by pushing the metallic touch button located on the top.
FINAL DESIGN
THE BOOK was exhibited at Seoul Design Festival Exhibition and received Seoul Venture Competitive Award.
